Hello internets! My better half's nickname for me is Nu Nu and this is my blog called "Shake it Out, Nunu". The blog's majority of content will comprise of my fitness routine at Hard Exercise Works (HEW) and how my less than one-hour commitment-a-day has transitioned my days to a 24/7 dedication –– shifting a diet mostly comprised of the paleo-zone regiment and getting my lethargic bones off the couch.
My previous "potato couch me" and seasonal, (before summer) gym attendance is now a past. A past when I thought eating only one meal-a-day would suffice my nourishment to then working out two to three hours at LA Fitness of pure cardio for two weeks; and then back to poor diet and no exercise. It was a rollercoaster of increased/decreased activity to heavy dinners, chip-obsessed post 8-hour sedentary career.
But you know what was the constant? I didn't lose weight and my energy levels were spiking slower than my metabolism can fathom. As my petite frame continued to blow up and my clothes were constantly being donated to Goodwill, my self-esteem was at an all-time low.
Then the magic of Groupon came to the rescue. It was a 5-week bootcamp with a mantra simply stated: "It's Not Complicated. Hard Exercise Works." My first day at HEW was November 7, 2011, almost a year and a half ago. And since then I've came down to almost 4 dress sizes, lost 20 lbs and feel so confident about myself that I want to share my story with everyone.
The name of the blog, Shake it Out, is perhaps the best advice I was given in the midst of a WOD called "Lucifer". The WOD was burpee and thruster movements of 21 reps, 15 reps and 9 reps. Better known as a 21-15-9 hell of a ride. I was in my fifth week of bootcamp and this benchmark slapped me in the face. I had grown comfortable to the beginner's (lightest) weight until it came time for the warm-up when my coach graduated me to a heavier weight. It was the hardest workout I had done to that date. After 21 unbroken burpees, I was unsure whether or not I could accomplish 21 -- err let alone 5 thrusters. But my coach was there. He kept pushing and saying "shake it out, 2 seconds, pick it back up."
By the end of the WOD, my body hit the floor. But most of all, I remember walking out and knowing that I had survived. And since then, I have been trying to push myself to the limits. And this shall be the place where I document my accomplishments of breaking personal records as well as my trials and tribulations of being human; aiming to be that Wonder Woman we all wish we were.
